When growing scouts on a smoothed brain, then smoothing further the scouts appear not to be on the cortex because we have altered the brain surface (i.e. they do not follow the cortical surface as it is further smoothed). This is simply a visualization problem. To force the scout to redraw, click + and then - on the 'scout size'.
