I am getting this error when I attempt to run the "input anatomy folder (auto)" command. The same problem occurs when I run the regular "input anatomy folder" after I try to run the MNI normalization with maff8. please help.

Hi @juliadecker,

This Error in mne_read_surface.m seems to be originated by file lh.pial.T1 itself, it could be a symbolic link that is mishandled, or a file that was not correctly copied. See this post for further details:

There are maybe issues in the ways links are being handled here. FreeSurfer 7.x creates links between certain files, typically lh.pial is not a real file, but a symbolic link to lh.pial.T1. Because symbolic links are not handled in all the programs or OS in the same way, there are sometimes conversions that are done, e.g. when copying the FreeSurfer subject folder to a Windows computer, or when zipping and unzipping. Different states can result from these successive symbolic link conversions: …

If you still have issues at importing the anatomy folder; could you share the a sample file that causes the issue, to understand what is going on? Upload the file somewhere and post the download links here.

The magic number are (24) bits at the beginning of the file that identify the format of the data in the surface file.
