1 PhD and 1 Post-doc needed @ Western Epilepsy
We are searching for 1 PhD researcher and 1 Post-Doctoral researcher interested in working in the fields of neurophysiology/neuroimaging/epilepsy, ranging from intracellular recordings using patch-clamp and multi electrode arrays in human slices to stereoEEG, high-density EEG, TMS-EEG and 7T fMRI.
Research activities are conducted at the Comprehensive Epilepsy Program @ Western University – London Health Science Center and @ the Robarts Research Institute in London, Ontario, Canada, and in collaboration with internationally renowned partners.
The Comprehensive Epilepsy Program at Western University – London Health Science Center is one of the largest surgical centers in North America, with an 11 bed Epilepsy Monitoring Unit (EMU), and access to cutting-edge neuroimaging and neurophysiology. The program is the hub of a large neuroscientific and health care network, serving people in Ontario and Nationwide.
The research goal is to investigate the neural substrates of neuronal excitability in the normal human brain and during disease.
Activities are supervised by Drs. Giovanni Pellegrino, Julio Martinez-Trujillo, Ali Khan. The trainees will be plugged in a large network of labs and researchers including J. Burneo, A. Suller-Marti, D. Steven, J. Lau, L Muller and others.

Dear Drs. Giovanni Pellegrino, Julio Martinez-Trujillo, Ali Khan
I received an email containing information about a job opportunity in neurophysiology, neuroimaging, and epilepsy fields developed at the Western University–London Health Science Center and the Robarts Research Institute in London. I would like to apply for this opportunity because I have a great interest in the topics of these researchers. I am a Psychologist and recently completed my PhD (December, 2023) in the Medicine program at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS), Porto Alegre, Brazil. I have worked in the Laboratory of Pain and Neuromodulation, which is coordinated by Dr. Wolnei Caumo. My research involved neurophysiological measures using EEG to evaluate coherence connectivity in women diagnosed with fibromyalgia treated with transcranial direct current stimulation. During the research time in the laboratory, I worked with TMS to measure the motor evoked potential, intracortical inhibition, intracortical facilitation, and cortical silent period. Furthermore, they participated in the fNIRS projects. Currently, I am collaborating ( home office work from Brazil) with researchers David Mayor and Tony Steffert from University of Hertfordshire, UK. We analyses the brain connectivity using EEG measures, after Transcutaneous electroacupuncture stimulation in healthy participants.I have previous experience in MATLAB and basic knowledge of Python. I would like more information about submission to these job opportunities.
Best wishes,
Dr. Rael Lopes Alves
Dear Giovanni Pellegrino,
Thank you very much for reaching out regarding this exciting opportunity. I am extremely interested in the research field you are working in, as it aligns perfectly with my primary career aspirations. I am currently completing my Master’s in Biomedical Engineering at the University of Bologna, and I would be very keen to explore the possibility of undertaking an internship within your research project, with the aim of developing my thesis work.
I understand that you are primarily looking for candidates with a slightly different profile, but I believe I meet the prerequisites, including strong proficiency in Matlab and Python, and I am confident that this experience would be immensely beneficial for my academic and professional growth.
I apologize if my inquiry is not entirely aligned with your current needs, but I thought it would be worth asking nonetheless. I hope there could be an opportunity to collaborate, even if in a different capacity than originally outlined.
Please let me know if there is any possibility, and I remain at your disposal for further information or discussion.
P.S. "I have attached my CV for your reference, and I would be happy to provide any additional information if needed."
Best regards,
Francescoflavio Falcone
