Hello Brainstorm team,
I am planning EEG analyses that are similar to typical MEG workflows. Specifically, I would like to:
・Record EEG data.
・Use individual MRI structural images to create a head model.
・Perform source estimation (e.g., Minimum Norm) at the source level.
・Extract frequency features from source-level signals.
In this workflow, I am considering applying the REST (Reference Electrode Standardization Technique) to reduce reference-dependency in EEG signals before source estimation.
I would like to ask:
・Is it feasible to apply REST in Brainstorm for EEG data prior to source estimation?
・Are there example scripts or tutorials for using REST in combination with individual MRI-based source reconstruction?
Best regards,
Hi!
I’m not sure about the REST method, but I know Brainstorm automatically re-references the EEG recording to the Average reference before computing source analysis.

Indeed, currently REST is not available within Brainstorm.
One possible solution is to apply re-referencing outside Brainstorm then import the data for further analysis.
Thank you for your advice.
Could you please explain in detail how to apply REST externally and then import the data into Brainstorm?
@rpa19008 you can refer to this paper for more details.
You will also find the associated codes to use either by scripting or via the EEGLAB.
@tmedani @tourette95
I appreciate your very helpful advice regarding the answer.
I may have further questions in the future, so I look forward to your continued support.

Reference Electrode Standardization Technique (REST) aka Infinity reference is now available (15-Sep-2025) in Brainstorm as montage, and as method for re-referencing EEG.
Please note that you must have a head model for EEG in order to use REST.

That’s excellent news—thank you for sharing! Having REST (Infinity reference) available both as a montage and a re-referencing method in Brainstorm will definitely expand the flexibility of EEG analysis. Looking forward to trying it out.
